I traveled to Centennial Park early yesterday morning to practice flight shots of the Canada Geese and some of the other overwintering water fowl. About 2-3 hours after I arrived, two male Hooded Mergansers decided to try and win over the approval of a female Merganser swimming nearby; and they began to perform a series of courtship "dances" to try to impress her.

They circled near and around her lifting their heads up high and making "throaty" courtship calls: not unlike a frog's sound.

Not sure if the female was duly impressed... but I had lots of fun watching and capturing their antics. Click the first large thumbnail for a larger view. Use the right arrow key to display successive photos.
