Centennial Park January 17, 2015

The story behind the photo: I was watching a gull playing with a fragment of ice on the partially frozen Centennial Lake. It seemed to be having a lot of fun simply pushing the 1 inch-sized fragment of ice around on the frozen lake as if it were playing hockey. The gull eventually took the ice fragment in its bill and flew off with it. A few moments later I noticed the gull was making highly erratic flight maneuvers, so I started shooting to try and capture the gull's rapid twists and turns in the air. Only after reviewing my shots did I realize that (s)he was playing with the ice fragment while in flight!

This shot captures the gull chasing down the ice fragment as it sailed through the air just inches in front of its bill.
